I’m a metal-loving transport nerd and wondering what the future holds for this platform which is why I set up https://glennlyons.blog/.
If you regularly use this platform as your primary means of keeping in touch with your professional network and getting involved in exchange of knowledge and opinion, how would you feel if your account was suddenly suspended with no explanation? This is not a hypothetical for some people.
With the demise of Twitter, this platform matters more than ever and, by and large, serves its fuction of professional networking really well in my view. Sure, the algorithm holds sway on what exposure your contributions get but I understand why all posts can’t be sent to all people (in your network) all of the time.
However, the fact that someone can have their account suspended and then, having tried to address it, get an email saying their account has been permanently suspended, and then as if by magic their account is reactivated, is bound to screw with your head if it happens to you. It is a stark realisation that WE ARE OPERATING HERE IN PRIVATISED PUBLIC SPACE – our ‘club membership’ can be revoked by the club at any time.
Having realised I download so much of my consciousness onto this platform I decided a few months ago that I needed a backup plan – a slightly more ‘public’ public space – even if it’s off the main square down a side alley where few people go.
Most of what I post on this platform now gets replicated on my blogging website (linking back to the original LinkedIn post) and you can subscribe for free if you want to be emailed the contents of new posts when they go live.
I have so far dealt with 43.3657% of my back catalogue of posts – sorted into the following categories:
🤘 climate action
🤘 decarbonisation
🤘 decide and provide
🤘 equality, diversity and inclusion
🤘 fireside chats
🤘 foresight
🤘 heavy metal
🤘 politics, power and profit
🤘 random stuff
🤘 road investment
🤘 sustainable transport
Yes – you’ll find posts on false precision under ‘random stuff’ (here’s what I saw on LinkedIn this week, it beggars belief: “The global Commercial Drones market size was valued at USD 3262.89 million in 2021 and is expected to expand at a CAGR of 6.82% during the forecast period, reaching USD 4846.24 million by 2027”). I’m joking with my false precision; they’re not.
I’d love to bump into some of you down that side alley – it doesn’t mean we won’t see lots of each other still in the main square.
